What You Will Learn In This Seminar:

Two popular genres driven by suspense. The horror section covers creating dread, loss of free will, fear of the unknown, classic horror (like THE OTHERS) vs. Stalk & Slash and Modern Horror. How to create a monster and find and *original* horror idea. What do ROSEMARY'S BABY, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, THE EXORCIST, BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, THE OTHERS and OPEN WATER have in common? Examples from the new FRIDAY THE 13th and LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT movies, plus dozens of others.

The thriller section covers the essentials of a thriller screenplay, using examples from MINORITY REPORT, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, BOURNE IDENTITY, BREAKDOWN, THE LADY VANISHES, THE GAME and THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR as primary examples - what do all of those films have in common? Plus the 20 iconic scenes in Thriller films, and how suspense works using MINORITY REPORT as an example and how plot twists work using BOURNE SUPREMACY and other films.  We will look at *contained* thrillers, MacGuffins, character arcs and finding a high concept twist for your story.

About The Teacher, William Martell:

WILLIAM MARTELL has written eighteen produced films including three HBO World Premiere movies two ShowtimesWilliam Martell some CineMax Premieres and two USA Network thrillers. Ebert discussed his work on 'Siskel and Ebert's If We Picked The Winners' Oscar show in 1997 he was on the 2004 Raindance Film Fest jury (London).  Here is more information on him from his blog:

I've written 19 films that were carelessly slapped onto celluloid: 3 for HBO, 2 for Showtime, 2 for USA Net, and a whole bunch of CineMax Originals (which is what happens when an HBO movie goes really, really wrong). I've been on some film festival juries, including Raindance in London (twice - once with Mike Figgis and Saffron Burrows, once with Lennie James and Edgar Wright). Roger Ebert discussed my work with Gene Siskel on his 1997 "If We Picked The Winners" Oscar show. I'm quoted a few times in Bordwell's great book "The Way Hollywood tells It". My USA Net flick HARD EVIDENCE was released on video the same day as the Julia Roberts' film Something To Talk About and out-rented it in the USA. I've also written a whole bunch of theatrical projects that never got made (I got paid) and was stupid enough to actually *turn down* the job of adapting Dan Brown's ANGELS & DEMONS.
