Do
the AAA Screenplay Contest
And The Expo Screenplay
Competition
Really Match Their Hype?
You be the judge...
Hot Off the Presses March 1, 2010:
"AWS Management is thrilled to represent a writer of David
Sakmyster's caliber. With his unique style, and high concept
horror/thriller/supernatural scripts as well as a background in writing novels,
David is a committed, experienced writer we are happy to have on board. AWS
Management is a boutique literary management firm in North Hollywood,
representing commercial, original, and brilliant screenwriters."
David J. Sakmyster's script, "Roadside Assistance," a thriller,
was a 2009 Expo Screenplay Competition runnerup
"Hi Bill,
"I just wanted to write and thank you again for the amazing honor of winning the Grand Prize in the Expo Competition, and also share some good news with you! The award has REALLY made an amazing difference in my career--it's stunning! After the conference, I had a bunch of great meetings, and then ended up signing with Alan Gasmer as my manager! He was formerly the head of the Motion Picture Lit department at William Morris before starting his own management company, and I am SO excited to be working with him.
"This is an enormous step forward for my career and I owe it all to you and Creative Screenwriting! I am sure to get plenty of meetings in NY and LA in the next few weeks and it's very, very exciting. I will definitely keep you posted on further developments and I'll also be in touch with Danny Munso about the interview in the magazine.
"Once again, thank you so much for this amazing award. I want to do everything I can to help CS in return, and if there's any way I can do that, including helping at the next Expo, please let me know.
"Thanks again! "Daniel Ragussis, 2009 Expo Screenplay Competition Winner

"Hi Pasha (AAA Contest
Manager Pasha McKenley),
Well,
after all the hassle I've given you, I have to
tell you that it's no longer necessary for you to send my FOUNDING
FATHERS script to anyone. Thanks to the pitchfest at the
Expo, I
connected with Jarrod Murray of PCH Films who then passed my script on
to the management team of Kaplan-Perrone. I met with Aaron
Kaplan and
Sean Perrone this week and they have agreed to represent me and shop my
script around to the studios.
My head is spinning...my writing career is taking off...and I owe it
all to entering my script in the Creative Screenwriting AAA Contest
last fall!
Thanks so much for all of your time and kindness. I hope to
see you
again soon.
Take care,
~Robert Lugibihl

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?
A:
The script is titled, "Without Consent." It's a VERY dramatic David and
Goliath story, a small man fighting against the abuse of power by big
government. It's the story of a progressive native American tribal
leader in post-WW II America who battles the federal government when he
discover that it plans to take his tribe's land to build a dam that
will flood eight towns and hundreds of thousands of prime agriculture
and grazing land, basically terminating his tribe. It's based on a true
story.
Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?
A:
I entered this contest because I knew it was an important one; the
winning scripts are sent out to a list of producers and agents who
routinely ask for them. I did enter a variety of other contests during
the preceding year. In some of them I got into the quarter-finals. In
others I got into the semi-finals. In others I got nowhere. But the AAA
Contest received my best script. It was the script I completed after
having lived on an Indian reservation for a month, interviewing tribal
members who were around at the time of the struggle and the flood, and
soaking up the feelings of being on the reservation. The script I wrote
after I came back from the reservation (and subsequent revisions)
really caught the essence I was missing initially, and I also
restructured the story somewhat.
Q: Were you satisfied with the
administration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you
receive all the awards that were promised?
A: Very satisfied.
Creative Screenwriting Magazine was great. The director of the contest,
Pasha McKenley, and the editor, Bill Donovan, made me feel like I was
part of the company's extended family. I went to the Screenwriters Expo
in Los Angeles a week ago and received a lot of prizes, and more are on
their way. It has been a fantastic experience.

From 2008 AAA Winner Jon Miller:
Hi Pasha,
Congratulations on another great Expo! I spoke with my fellow AAA
winner Chris Canole while I was in LA, but didn't have a chance to say
hello to you (I'm sure you were super busy anyway). Chris suggested
that I be part of the panel he moderated on script contest winners this
year at next year's expo. I was really excited by his invitation and
hope to do so at Expo 2010.
Chris also suggested I get in touch with you and update you on my
screenwriting career. Since winning the AAA contest in 2008, I joined
the WGAw IWC. This year Garbo's Last Stand finaled in a number of contests, and currently is up for the Golden Brad Award. My other script, Agent Cynthia,
won the Best Historical Screenplay award at the 2009 ThrillSpy
International Film Festival in Washington D.C. and received an
Honorable Mention at the '09 Big Bear International Film Festival. It
also was requested by Chris Pan of NEXT films, who I pitched to at this
year's expo. But it all started with the AAA Grand Prize in '08, and I
want to thank you and everyone at CS again for your support in getting
my screenwriting career off the ground!
Please stay in touch and congratulations again on a fantastic
Expo. You guys really went above and beyond this year and it showed.
Sincerely,
Jon Miller
Excerpt from Creative Screenwriting Magazine, May-June 2010 (heading to press as this is posted)
WITH SO MANY screenwriting
contests out there, and new ones cropping up all the time, you may
wonder if submitting your script is worth your time, effort and money.
Mark Elliot Kratter would unequivocally answer yes. On the heels of
being a semifinalist in not only the Nicholl Fellowship in
Screenwriting but also a finalist in the 2009 AAA Screenplay Contest and a 2nd Place Winner of the PAGE International Screenwriting Awards Contest, Kratter’s screenplay Endangered is now slated to be co-financed and produced by Radar Pictures, the company that produced last year’s The Box and the remakes of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Amityville Horror.
